The birth of the “Olio dei Papi” brand combines the desire to rediscover the local productive vocation and the history of the territories involved, on the basis of a detailed historiographical research work from which it emerged that the olive tree is still the most cultivated species in the province of Frosinone and in the Pontine Marshes.
The research conducted has allowed us to understand how, with the reforms contained in the Motu Proprio of Pius VI of 21 April 1778, the Papal State transformed the economic identity and the productive vocation of these territories by transforming the cultivation of the olive tree from a subsistence economy linked to the satisfaction of family needs for self-consumption, to a real organised production that has catered for the needs of Rome and the papacy for many, many decades.
The “Olio dei Papi” is entirely traceable, following a rigorous Production Specification that establishes physical and chemical standards that are more restrictive than current regulations. The company has developed an online identification system allowing to ascertain the origin of the oil, the production area, the mill used and, where possible, the name of the producer and his olive grove.
The main olive varieties are: Frantoio, Itrana, Carboncella, Moraiolo, Leccino, Salviana, Rosciola and Marina di San Donato.
